Relax...Exhale...Sleep

Welcome to Heart to Heart with Honeydew! This week, I give you a trick to fall asleep quickly, share some new research, and tell you a bit about my painful journey.

I have a sleep trick for you.

The key is to relax your entire body, starting from the top of your head down to the tips of your toes.

Relax groups of muscles in each area of the body as you move down, one group at a time. Start with your face, then your shoulders, arms, etc. When you get to your torso, take a big exhale...

Then do the same thing down your legs until you get to your feet and toes...and a big exhale.

Apparently, this trick works so well that even the US military uses it in some of the toughest situations!

REM sleep is great, right?

Well, yes. However, it was recently found that those with a little-known REM sleep disorder may be at a higher risk for Parkinson's and dementia.

Patients with REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD) will actually act out their dreams during REM sleep. This often puts them and their loved ones at risk for injury.

Recently, it's been found that over 70% of those with RBD end up with Parkinson's and/or dementia, and this sleep disorder may be the first symptom noticed.

Unfortunately, there's not yet much we know about this condition - but that just means there's room for more research. If you feel that you or a loved one are suffering from this condition, it's recommended to discuss your symptoms with a neurologist.
